Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their bid to win the Premier League after striker Robin van Persie suffered an ankle injury in Holland’s friendly with Italy that could keep him out for a couple of months. The 26-year-old was stretchered off after 10 minutes of the match on Saturday, following a clash with Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini. Arsenal have yet to confirm how long the free-scoring forward will be out for but the indications are that van Persie, who was immediately taken to hospital for scans, has suffered a fairly serious injury and he may not play again this year. A spokesman for the Dutch Football Association said: “We think it’s ligaments but will know later on Sunday. The medical staff were not talking about a break of the bone but it didn’t look too good.” The news is another blow for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who looks set to lose his leading goalscorer ahead of the busy festive period and could hit their chances of landing the title for the first time in five years. Wenger is already without Niclas Bendtner and Theo Walcott through injury and now the loss of van Persie, who has hit seven league goals already this term, adds to his woes ahead of next weekend’s clash at Sunderland.
