Wenger wins war of nerves

Arsene Wenger suggested Arsenal had overcome a mental block by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield to launch themselves right back into the Premier League title race.

Critics were quick to write the north Londoners off when they were beaten by leaders Chelsea recently and the writing appeared on the wall on Sunday when Dirk Kuyt rewarded the home side with an opening goal.

Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas revealed Wenger was so angry at the interval he told them “they didn’t deserve to wear the shirt”.

It appeared to do the trick because an own goal from Glen Johnson and thunderous strike from Andrey Arshavin secured the Gunners maximum points to send them back to third place in the table, six points behind Chelsea with a game in hand.

Wenger was delighted Arsenal had proved they can compete against one of their title rivals and insisted the race for the Premier League crown was wide open.

The Frenchman said: “For us, we are back into contention following the results from Saturday. We are in a good position with a game in hand and mentally it was a massive game for us.”

He added: “The team who wins this title will be the one who is the most consistent, and nobody has done that yet.”
