Liverpool appear close to securing the services of Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid while Andrea Dossena and Andriy Voronin are on the verge of Anfield exits. Reds boss Rafa Benitez wants Argentinian Rodriguez for the second half of the campaign and is hoping to land the Argentinan midfielder on an initial loan deal, possibly over an 18-month period. That, it has been suggested, would cost Liverpool just £1.5million with funds available provided Dossena leaves for Napoli for around £4million and Voronin joins Dinamo Moscow for £1.5million. Rodriguez is an attacking right-sided midfielder - an area Benitez believes he needs to strengthen with Dirk Kuyt usually employed there - as he looks to get the Reds into the top four in the Premier League in the second half of the season. Dossena's agent has revealed the full-back's return to Italy has only been held up by the snowy weather in Liverpool stopping him flying out while Voronin has held talks about a move to Russia with Dinamo. Despite the transfer dealings, Benitez is unlikely to get much more money to spend in the January transfer window unless he can offload Ryan Babel for a significant sum with Birmingham, who have already had one bid in the region of £8million rejected, interested in the Dutch winger.
