Spanish maestro Mikel Arteta expects to hand Everton an injury boost next year after almost 12 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

The former Glasgow Rangers and Real Sociedad star damaged ligaments back in February against Newcastle and has not played since after suffering a setback.

The 27-year-old schemer had been pencilled in for a comeback in October but he needed another minor operation which set him back another few months.

But Arteta has now revealed there is light at the end of the tunnel which will be a welcome boost for the Goodison Park outfit.

He told the Liverpool Post: “For the past few days I have been able to run at a good rhythm and I am starting to train with the rest of the squad.

“I don’t have pain in my knee. I expect to be back on the pitch in less than two months.

“It has been hell. I would spend eight to 10 hours a day just dedicated to recuperating.

“I was obsessed. But now, fortunately, I can say that everything is going well and all I want is to be with my team-mates and help the team.”
