Emile Heskey last night admitted he would consider leaving Aston Villa during the January transfer window if he does not regain a starting place for the club, in an attempt to boost his chance of securing a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for the World Cup finals.
The 31-year-old has been one of the first names on Capello’s team-sheet for the past year, but has started only one Premier League match for Villa this season, and is concerned that a lack of club football could damage his prospects for South Africa.
“I’m happy to be playing for England and, obviously, not playing at club level is difficult,” Heskey said.
“It’s something I will have to look at when I get back and try to address it.
When asked whether that meant he would be seeking a move in the winter transfer window, Heskey replied: “I will have to sit down and think about my next move.
"I don't know whether I can get a World Cup place if I'm not playing for Villa.
"The manager [Capello] hasn't really spoken to me about it.
"I just have to keep performing well in training and keep going.
"But you always wonder about those kind of things, whether it will affect my chances.
"I will just have to try to address it when the time is right."
Villa boss O'Neill spent £3.5m to sign Heskey over from Wigan in January.
