Rafael Benitez claims his Liverpool players did not show the necessary attitude and character after their Champions League qualification hopes were handed a huge blow with a 1-0 defeat at Premier League strugglers Wigan on Monday.
Latics hitman Hugo Rodallega scored the only goal of the game at the DW Stadium to leave Benitez’s side a point behind fourth-place Tottenham, who have played a game less.
Fifth-placed Manchester City have the same number of points as Spurs, but now have two games in hand over the Reds, while Aston Villa are in seventh with 45 points from 26 games which means a top-four finish is very much out of the Merseysiders’ hands.
“I’m really disappointed,” Benitez said. “The first half we didn’t do anything and we didn’t show the attitude that is required. It’s difficult to explain.
“At half-time we talked about the things we weren’t doing well – the attitude and the character. We made too many mistakes and played too quickly.”
