Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow has insisted that Rafael Benitez‘s job is ‘under no threat’, despite the club crashing out of the Champions League before the knockout stages.
The Reds won 1-0 in Debrecen on Tuesday night, thanks to David Ngog’s fourth-minute strike, but Fiorentina beat Lyon by the same score at home which condemned Liverpool to their first exit at the group stages for six years and a place in the Europa League.
However, Purslow has reiterated that Benitez’s position at the club is safe.
“You can never predict last-minute goals, which have cost us dear in the Champions League. That’s no basis to make managerial decisions,” Purslow said.
“We don’t run our business in that respect. I’m on the record as saying Rafa’s signed a new five-year contract, he’s four months into that contract so to discuss that is not appropriate. He is under no threat.”
Benitez’s next task is to try and engineer a win in the Merseyside derby at Everton on Sunday as he looks to eradicate a five-point deficit on fourth-placed Tottenham, while leaders Chelsea have a massive 13-point lead over the Reds.
