Liverpool will be without defender Martin Skrtel for two months following confirmation that he has suffered a broken metatarsal, adding to Rafa Benitez’s defensive concerns.
The Slovakia international, who has made 19 Premier League appearances this season, suffered a broken foot in the Reds 3-1 away win against Unirea Urziceni in the Europa League last Thursday.
Skrtel has been told that he does not need an operation on his foot, but the 25-year-old is now likely to be sidelined until the end of April.
The centre-back’s absence is a big blow to the Merseysiders hopes of clinching fourth place and is compounded by an injury worry over Daniel Agger, who suffered severe bruising to his knee in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Blackburn.
There is some better defensive news on the horizon for Benitez though, as Liverpool could welcome back Glen Johnson, who has been out since December, to the squad for next Monday’s trip to Wigan.
