Manchester United will be without Michael Owen for the rest of the season after the striker was told he needs an operation to cure a hamstring injury.
The former Liverpool and Newcastle striker was forced to leave the pitch during the first-half of Sunday’s Carling Cup final, having scored the equaliser in the 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
Owen was sent for a scan on the hamstring this week by United’s medical team and the results will come as a blow to Sir Alex Ferguson.
The United boss revealed: “It is a terrible blow for the lad. It is more serious than we thought. I think the heavy pitch at Wembley played some part, but it’s also bad luck.”
With United still chasing Premier League and Champions League glory, Owen’s absence will hit Ferguson’s attacking options in the end of season run-in. The 30-year-old has scored nine goals in all competitions this season.
The injury also looks set to end Owen’s chances of being selected in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
