Birmingham have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Michel from Sporting Gijon for a fee reported to be around £3m, the La Liga club have confirmed.
However, the 24-year-old, who must first complete a medical, is unlikely to be signed in time for the Premier League visit of champions Manchester United on Saturday.
Blues manager Alex McLeish had made no secret of his desire to bolster his engine room, and said: "We've watched Michel for over a year and a bit now and we need to try and get this one over the line, but it looks likely."
The St. Andrews boss, who has been given a cash injection from new owner Carson Yeung, also refused to rule out a January move for striker Kenwyne Jones of Sunderland, while admitting he has made an enquiry about Aiden McGeady of Celtic.
McLeish added: "We've made enquiries about a lot of people. I don't want to confirm or deny a bid has gone in (for Kenwyne Jones).
"As regards Aiden McGeady, we made an enquiry but we were told he is not for sale. The situation won't change until someone says he is up for sale."

Read somewhere that Sporting also gets 10% of a future Michel sale, is that true?
