As yet another action-packed football season draws to a close, the final English Premier League games of the 09/10 season take place on Sunday.

League leaders Chelsea will face Wigan at Stamford Bridge. Last weekend’s 2-0 victory at Liverpool edged Chelsea closer to a third Premier League title in six seasons, but they still have to beat Wigan Athletic to be certain of ending Manchester United’s recent dominance.

Second-placed Manchester United will go up against Stoke City at Old Trafford, in what will be the make or break of their title-winning hopes. Manchester United must beat Stoke City and hope Chelsea slip up against Wigan Athletic if they are to secure a record-breaking fourth successive Premier League title. The odds aren’t looking good for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, but can they manage to sneak up from behind on the final day of the season to nab the championship title?

The Premier League title race continues this weekend as current league leaders Chelsea go up against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Blues’ bid to stay at the top will be put to the test by the Reds, who are chasing a top-four spot.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are just two wins away from recapturing the Premier League title for the first time since they claimed it at the end of the 2005-06 season. And with Manchester United just one point behind them and breathing down their necks, a win against Liverpool would see the Blues go into the match with Wigan Athletic on the final day with a huge chance of ending the Red Devils’ three-year stint as Premier League champions.

However, Liverpool won’t make it easy for them whether fourth place is up for grabs or not.

Later on Sunday, current second-placed Manchester United clash with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. For the Red Devils – who are one point behind Chelsea with just two matches to go – this match is a must-win if they are to secure a fourth consecutive title win. And while in theory, Chelsea arguably face a tougher match this weekend, the Black Cats are in good form at home and have already beaten the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham there.

So which side will edge closer to the Premier League title win this weekend?

The Premier League continues to bring on the action and excitement this weekend as the season nears its end.

Saturday sees current second-placed Manchester United against fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Both sides know that this is a must-win game following their respective results against Manchester City and Chelsea last weekend that re-opened both the title race and the battle for fourth spot.

Later on Saturday, third-placed Arsenal take on fifth-placed Manchester City at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have suffered a bad past few weeks having crashed out of the Champions League and having their title dreams ended for another season following back to back league defeats. The Citizens have already beaten Arsenal twice this season in league and cup matches, but both of those matches were at home. It has been 35 years since City last managed to win away at Arsenal.

Sunday sees Chelsea against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea know that three more wins will bring them a third Premier League title, but some of their nervous performances in recent weeks suggest that this could be a trickier task than it may seem to be. The Blues have a strong recent record against Stoke, winning their last six league games against the Midlanders, but two of Stoke’s three away wins this season have come in the capital, so they will not be shying away from the metropolitan surrounds at Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League action continues on Wednesday night when Hull City go up against Aston Villa.

For both sides, Wednesday’s clash will have a large bearing on their season’s hopes. While Villa still have a mathematical chance of reaching a top four spot and a place in UEFA Champions League football, they will more realistically be looking to secure a Europa League spot ahead of Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the task for Hull is more desperate – The Tigers currently lie four points from safety and have only four games left to try and avoid a return to the Championship after spending two seasons in the top-flight for the first time in the club’s history. Will they manage to make it into a third Premier League season?

The Premier League is hotting up as the season enters its final weeks.

Saturday sees current fourth-placed Manchester City hosting second-placed Manchester United. The Red Devils go into this game four points adrift of league leaders Chelsea after only taking one point from the last two Premier League games, while rivals Manchester City come into this game having won their last three Premier League games – scoring 14 goals in the process and conceding just two.

Saturday also sees another important match – Tottenham Hotspur versus Chelsea.

The Blues can almost taste victory as they aim to take the Premier League crown from Manchester United. They are four points clear at the top of the ladder with only four games left, and they know that if they can win three of them, the title is theirs.

However, the first of those matches is Saturday’s tough match against Spurs who have their eyes set on playing Champions League football next season, but must finish fourth in the league to do so. Going into this weekend’s games, Spurs sit in fifth place, one point behind Manchester City, but five points clear of sixth placed Liverpool.

With the league title race hotting up, Manchester United travel to Ewood Park on Sunday to take on Blackburn Rovers as they look to keep pace with current leaders Chelsea.

However, with a disappointing midweek European game against Bayern Munich which wrecked Manchester United’s hopes of reaching the Champions League final, as well as a potential hangover from last weekend’s defeat against Chelsea, United will need to dig deep as they will be facing one of the top division’s in-form sides on home soil.

Sunday also sees Liverpool up against Fulham at Anfield. Liverpool only managed to draw against Birmingham last weekend, and if they are to topple Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for fourth place on the league ladder, then they will most likely need to win all five of their last five games.

The big game of this weekend will no doubt be the clash between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Man of the moment, Wayne Rooney, will have to sit out this potential Premier League title-decider after damaging his ankle in Manchester United’s 2-1 Champions League defeat in Munich on Tuesday.

However, the Red Devils will still pose a serious threat to the visiting Blues, having won 10 and drawn one of the 11 league games in which Rooney hasn’t featured since the start of the 2008/09 season.

Chelsea will no doubt be full of confidence following their 7-1 demolition against Aston Villa last Saturday, a result they themselves recorded without the presence of their star striker, Didier Drogba.

The battle for top place on the Premier League ladder continues later in the day, as Arsenal meet Wolverhampton Wanderers at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners must ensure that they do not underestimate an improving Wolves side, who have picked up eight points from their last four games to move five points clear of the drop zone. Arsenal will need to step up their game after their disappointing draw against Birmingham last Saturday and their testing Champions League Quarter Final tie against Barcelona on Wednesday.

The race will be on to hit the number one spot as the season enters its final weeks!

Saturday will be a big day for Premier League action, with all three teams in contention for the Premier League champions title trying to battle their way to the number one spot on the league table.

Arsenal face arguably one of their toughest remaining fixtures when they travel to St Andrews Ground on Saturday to take on Birmingham. The Gunners will be without their star defender Thomas Vermaelen, however following last week’s 2-0 win over West Ham United, and with the Gunners now sitting third in the league, just a point behind second place Chelsea and two points behind leaders Manchester United, form and confidence are on their side.

Saturday also sees Chelsea hosting Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s 5-0 thrashing of bottom-placed Portsmouth on Wednesday takes them to within one place of current Premier League leaders Manchester United and with an identical goal difference. This will certainly have helped restore their confidence after being knocked out of the Champions League and only managing to pull off a draw against Blackburn Rovers last weekend. However, Aston Villa will no doubt still have their eyes firmly on that fourth place in the league and Champions League football next year.

The final big game of the day sees current league leaders Manchester United away to Bolton Wanderers at Reebok Stadium. Manchester United will come into the game having won their last six matches and having only conceded two goals and scored fifteen out of those six games, while rivals Bolton have won three of their last five games, which is a remarkable turnaround given the fact they hadn’t won any of the previous seven.

The race will be on to hit the number one spot as the season enters its final weeks.

The Premier League action continues with midweek games this Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, West Ham host Wolves at Boleyn Ground. West Ham have lost their last four Premier League matches, while Wolves have taken four points from their last two away games, including Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Wednesday night will provide third-placed Chelsea with the perfect opportunity to lift themselves out of their current weak form when they take on bottom-placed Portsmouth at Fratton Park. A Chelsea victory is crucial if they are to stay in contention for the Premier League champions title. But while Portsmouth have not beaten Chelsea in the Premier League since Boxing Day 1957, Pompey could still have a few tricks up their sleeve for Wednesday.

This Saturday, Arsenal host London neighbours West Ham United in a match that is important for both teams as the Premier League season enters the final run in. The Gunners currently sit third in the league, just two points behind leaders Manchester United and level on points with second place Chelsea. And, with both rivals not playing their Premier League games until Sunday, a win for Arsenal would take them to the top of the league. West Ham United, on the other hand, face a different challenge as they desperately try to pick up points to avoid being dragged down into the relegation places. So the pressure is on for both teams to win!

But, there is no doubt that the big match this weekend will be when champions Manchester United clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, as the Red Devils battle to keep their crown and the Reds hunt the all-important fourth place in the Premier League. Who will succeed?
