Bruce firm over Ferdinand

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has ruled out a swap deal with Tottenham involving defenders Anton Ferdinand and Alan Hutton.

Spurs made a bid to sign former West Ham youngster Ferdinand on loan at the end of the last transfer window but the Black Cats were not interested in the proposal.

Fresh speculation has added fuel to the fire of an exchange in January involving the centre-half and right-back Hutton, however it will not happen, according to Bruce.

The Stadium of Light chief said: “It has obviously come from the summer when Harry came on deadline day to say he had a problem at centre-back and would I let Ferdinand go on loan?

“The simple answer was, ‘No, I am not interested in anything like that at all, no’.

“Whether that is still in Harry’s mindset, I do not know, but Ferdinand certainly won’t be going anywhere on loan, that’s for sure.

“Where the Hutton thing has come from, I don’t know.”

Spurs have problems at the back with Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate again struggling for fitness this season.
