Sunderland manger Steve Bruce has revealed that the Black Cats are close to offering a deal to free agent Bolo Zenden.
The 33-year-old winger left Marseille in the summer after his contract expired and has been on trial with Sunderland for the last two weeks in a bid to secure a new club.
Bruce has been keen to strengthen his midfield since the departures of Teemu Tainio and Grant Leadbitter this summer and sees the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona player as an ideal candidate to fill the void.
The former Netherlands international can also play down the left-flank and his versatility is thought to be a key factor in Bruce’s interest in Zenden.
The Black Cats boss has now revealed that he has been impressed with what he has seen of Zenden while he has been on Wearside, but failed to disclose when a deal might be concluded.
“He has been here a week now and I have to say he has impressed us all, not least with his fitness levels considering the fact that he is not with a club at the moment,” said Bruce.
“He also scored three times in a practice match this week and his team won 4-3 – so if ever he wanted to make a statement, that was it.”
Sunderland face Liverpool on Saturday and despite Bruce reportedly being keen on completing a deal for Zenden as soon as possible its thought nothing will be done before the game at the Stadium of Light this weekend.
