Wigan chairman Dave Whelan suggested former manager Steve Bruce should shoulder some of the blame for the 9-1 hammering by Tottenham on Sunday.
Whelan sprung to the defence of Roberto Martinez in the wake of the White Hart Lane mauling and insisted Latics would bounce back from their darkest day since their return to the Premier League when they face, ironically, Bruce's Sunderland on Saturday.
"He is Wigan's manager and I have complete faith in him and I know the supporters have," said Whelan.
The DW Stadium boss aimed a veiled swipe at Bruce and suggested Martinez had inherited "those dodgy signings" before he left for Premier League rivals Sunderland.
"He has got a difficult time, he inherited a team that was a little bit weak on reserves when Steve [Bruce] left," added Whelan.
"Steve actually had a few dodgy signings just before he left Wigan and he has inherited those dodgy signings so I can't blame Roberto one iota.
"I am absolutely 100 per cent behind Roberto, he's a great manager and he will pull this team around."

Ha ha, hilarious. Bruce managed Wigan to 11th place last seaon with the same ‘dodgy signings’ so what does that say? With the funds (or lack of funds) Bruce was given by Whelan he had no option but to scour the world for bargain signings and he did it well, only for Whelan to sanction the sales of players like Palacios and Valencia, against Bruce’s wishes and for a massive profit. Whelan and Wigan have benefitted trumendously from Bruce’s transfer dealings and a cheap shot like this is uncalled for. Whelan has again shown himself to be a prize clown who’s obviously bitter at the fact that Bruce left for a club with a bit of ambition and left Wheln to bring in a substandard untested Champuionship managr in his place. Hopefully it’ll lead to Wigan returning to the level they belong, Championship at best.
Whelan is a clown. Only a braying donkey would name the stadium after himself anyway. The only reason that Wigan is still alive financially is because of the big profits made on Steve Bruce’s signings. Whelan has pocketed a lot of transfer money lately and left the club in danger of relegation. I hope his supporters realize what he’s doing.
